It depends a lot more on the maintenance skill rather than the spear skill, I'd say that if you have like level 3 or 4, spears take almost twice as long to break, as opposed to level 0. To actually forage you want to use the magnifying glass icon on the left hand side of your screen. Also you don't need a tree branch, you can use any old plank of wood and craft it into a spear from the crafting menu. I cut down trees and saw the logs. No shortages of branches or plants that way.
