The XDS and G30S are both great choices. It just boils down to what not only feels better in your hand, but more so how you shoot each pistol. You can usually find a range that will rent an XDS. But the closest they will have to a G30S will be a G30 or G30SF. The slide is a little thinner on the G30S, it is a G30SF frame with a G36 slide.

The Gen3 G30, gen3 30SF & Gen4 G30SF have the same slide. The G30S has the skinniest slide out of all of them. All are great shooters with pinpoint accuracy (dependent on the shooter). All can take the G21 mags. For carry purposes the G30S would be a better option just because of the weight reduction of the slide & reduction in dimension.

Several years back, I had a chance to shoot my nephew's G30S and did not like it. At the time, I was mostly into 1911s but also had a G23 that I was in love with. Maybe it was the lighter slide, but the G30S seemed snappier than the G23 did to me at the time. For now though, the G30sf seems to have the right balance for me.

The 30S and the 30SF share the same frame. It's a Gen3 Short Frame "SF". The short frame is reduced trigger reach essentially. So the length from the back strap to the front of the grip is shorter. just looked it up - my p365 slide width is 0.90, G30/sf is 1.12, G30s is 1.0 So even the 30/sf is just under 1/4" wider. I cant see that making too much of a difference. Measure my XDs, which I'll throw in AIWB from time to time, and that's 0.9" as well I just don't know that .10-.22" is going to make that much of a difference for me.
