It had auto trans fluid in it. I didn't think it was unusual because the suburban runs with that. What I learned from all the helpful folks is the D 300 is a gear driven design and uses gear oil (85w90).Suburban is chain driven and uses dextron. I just use the 80w90 from walmart. Hello, so trying to decide what gear oil to put in my old dana 60 rear diff and there are some variables. It's a full float axle so the gear lube also lubricates the rear wheel bearings. It's from a 1975 w200 so I don't know if it has a limited slip differential or needs a modifier but could be wrong? I live in a climate of wide temperature ranges.It is however a waste of money to use the synthetic fluid in the differentials. I also have a D44 LSD rear. I paid equivalent to less than $25 for enough 85W140 fluid for both differentials. Just to give you an idea the MOPAR 80W-90 was around $180 for the fluid for both here in SA. Share.

This is also the capacity posted in the Geno's Garage tech section. The owner's manual also states to only fill to a level "3/4 inch below" fill plug hole.

Definitely NOT a 10.5L Sterling, which makes the literature wrong. Looks like you need 4.0L of 75w-90 synthetic oil. Depending on brand you may need to add ~8 oz of friction modifier, Ford calls theirs XL-3.
