I'm a white male with thick curls. I started about a month ago and the two strand twists at the front of my head hold their form pretty well, but haven't locked up yet. I just have a warm shower every day and carefully pat them dry with a towel. I then sit and twist them, while they air dry, and they get stronger by the day.
