BOTH oil and cooling warning lights. I have a 2005 VN750 that I bought in May 2011 and it too is hard starting when it is cold. Cold weather compounds the hard start issue. It starts fine later, after it is warmed up, as long as you open the throttle about one third when cranking and do not use the choke.

Removed the charcoal filter, valve and vacuum line. Had alread installed the fresh air block off plates to prevent backfiring. Run vent tube from under tank down to bottom of bike with other hose and no more problem.Clutch Slipping. My 2003 Vulcan 1500 Classic clutch started slipping at 38000 miles so I took it to the dealer and he replaced the clutch. I always shut the Vulcan down in neutral due to the key being down on the clutch side. Seen to many guys use the kill switch to shut down and forget to turn the key to off and deplete the battery. The Sporty ignition is on the right side so now I have a way to shut down in gear and fear the lunge. 08 Classic FI 1500. 06 Sporty 1200.

A friend (Mercedes tech) and I diagnosed coils as the issue, no voltage at plug wires. I let it sit over the winter as Chicago winters can get darn cold.

Here is a video of how to install one on a Kawasaki ZZR600 (couldn't find one for a Vulcan S.) ... even if the battery was discharged, I'm curious as to why it only posed a starting problem with the stand down. If the FI light is staying on after starting, that signals a fault in the FI system which usually triggers a stored fault code. I rode another fellows Vulcan 1500 of the same year and model and it was very quite, no noise like that. This is not a valve noise, its a severe noise which sounds to me like backlash in a gear set. Note, the noise is coming from the left very front side of the engine.
