after a couple of days of driving normally the CEL turned itself off. (checked the code and got the P0344 camshaft position sensor intermittent) That lasted for about a week during which the awful noise it was making stopped happening. Tested the signals (multimeter) coming out of the cam position sensor with it plugged in and engine running.
