Removing the screen on them can cause very real losses, depending on the model. That does NOT apply to the KLR. Same thing with air filters. You have a narrower head, a different balancer system, two timing chains to our one, more power. My suggestion would be to REMOVE the carburetor completely, disassenble it and thoroughly clean it.

2002 Kawasaki KLR 650 - $1500. • Starts easily and runs smooth. Excellent commuter bike, gets over 60mpg (highway). . .300 miles on a tank of gas. • 40,000 miles, but 99% were commuting to and from work. Calm down Dave, it's 208 kg kerbweight which is only a couple more than the 660 tenerlady single, plenty of folks have managed to go places on those and in the US at least the old KLR had a big following.
