The thaumaturge is a martial and even with the level 1 ammunition feat, it's clearly going to be easier to be in melee. You don't need to do anything special to make it succeed in melee. But with fairly few defensive options outside of Amulet, their hp will deplete a bit faster than a Fighter or Ranger.
