Open sights were also somewhat lower quality but still tapped for scope mounts. Our 1979-ish 30A has accounted for many deer and much appreciated freezer meat.

Geensled, The only difference in the 30AS and the 336 is the wood and the sights. The 30AS has a birch stock, carbine style front sight, and I believe a stamped sheetmeatal style rear with the sliding elevator. In regards to front sight on a 30A (S), going to a 3/8 wide dovetail is a perfect fit to the barrel compared to the too wide 1/2" dovetail stock one.
