Back when Gamespy shut down the master server to Neverwinter Nights, someone else basically made a master server of their own, and you could still connect to servers by use of direct connect. However, it's notable that Neverwinter Nights did not require a Gamespy account, but rather used Bioware's own servers.
Shutting down the servers is one thing, that's an eventuality with older games.
