Jul 20, 2004 · The Shovelheads weren't originally fitted with the VOES since most of them were low compression and generally they do not have problems with pre-ignition. Mine is 7.5:1 ratio. So, I think your problem is simply too much advance coupled with the missing VOES. By the way, don't throw that VOES out, a new one costs $65.00! Good luck on this. There's 2 ways: 1.) You'll need an ohm meter and a vacuum pump. Attach vacuum pump to the VOES sensor apply vacuum to it. At 3.5-4.5 lbs vacuum it should drop to zero ohms. If not zero or more, then replace. 2.)
